Although Digital Defence was only made an official pillar 15 February 2019, there have been many campaigns in Singapore aimed at improving media literacy in the general public. In the blog post, we will be listing 3 of such measures down but of course, this list is not exhaustive. We encourage you to do some more research yourself, or read more of the posts we have here. Have you heard of any of them?

1. Better Internet Campaign (BIC)

The first Better Internet Campaign (BIC) by Media Literacy Council (MLC) was launched in 2017 and has continued till 2020. This year, their theme is "1 Click Away". You might have seen some of their advertisements on public transport.

BIC 2020 expounds on the power behind the simple act of a click. It encourages internet users to adopt conscious, discerning, and empathetic online actions, and advocate for a better internet. Be Safe, Be Smart and Be Kind!

Our clicks online could be the difference between constructive or destructive internet. Whatever we put online have real and lasting consequences. Click on this link to find the BIC website and this one to look for more resources from Media Literacy Council.

2. Get Smart with Sherlock Fact-Checking Kit

Another measure by Media Literacy Council (MLC) Singapore! Based on the fictional character Sherlock Holmes, the kit features the detective trying to “solve the crime” of fake news. This kit comes in 5 books. These books cover topics such as the definition of fake news and the forms it can take, the consequences of spreading fake news, reasons why fake news is created and how to spot such false information in a easy-to-understand way! We strongly encourage you to check out these books yourselves as they really contain useful and fruitful information. They can all be easily accessed with a quick Google search or you can look for them on MLC's website under their resource page.

3. S.U.R.E Campaign

First launched in 2013 by National Library Board (NLB), S.U.R.E Campaign promotes the importance of information searching and discernment to the general public. S.U.R.E stands for Source, Understand, Research, Evaluate - four concepts one should keep in mind when checking for reliability in online sources. Check out the workshops that NLB has to introduce the essentials of combating fake news and contributing towards the Digital Defence of Singapore!

Did you know that there were so many campaigns? We hope you have learnt something new and helpful from these campaigns! :D
